DARE CAMP 2005
The
League City Police Department recently concluded
another summer series of its successful D.A.R.E. Camp
program. The week-long day camp was created with the goal of providing
our community’s
youth with a positive alternative activity to
help them resist drugs
and violence. The camp is open to all League City 5th grade D.A.R.E.
graduates and teaches participants to interact with one another,
build self-esteem, and develop their leadership skills.
The Police Department was able to increase the number of sessions
this year, thanks to a generous donation from the Space Center Rotary
Club. The camp also relies heavily on the support of parents and local
businesses such as McDonalds, Dominos Pizza, Horizon Indoor Sports,
Putt Putt Fun Center, and the Kemah Boardwalk.
This
year’s participants competed in various sporting activities
and received instruction on personal safety, self-esteem, peer pressure,
bullying, decision making and the harmful effects of drugs. Members
of the League City Emergency Medical Service (EMS), League City Volunteer
Fire Department, League City Animal Control and specialized units of
the Police Department stopped by throughout the week to visit the participants.
Participants were also treated to special days at various locations
such as the city pool, the Kemah Boardwalk and Putt Putt Golf Fun Center
in Webster. All students received a D.A.R.E. Camp t-shirt, lunches,
snacks and drinks. Each session concluded with an award presentation.
D.A.R.E.
Camp gets better each year and has become one of the League City
Police Department’s most popular community events.
