Host Anti-Drunk Driving Booth at the Village Fair
The League City Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association gave freely
of their time to staff a booth at the 2004 Village Fair held in May,
to educate the public about the dangers of drinking and driving. Using
these special goggles as a demonstration helps a person realize how
life-threatening it is to get into a car with someone who has been drinking
alcohol. With the instantaneous effects felt with the goggles, it is
not difficult to perceive how dangerous it is to try to operate a vehicle
after drinking alcohol.
Drunk-goggles were used to demonstrate the effects of alcohol by having
participants drive through an obstacle course. These goggles simulate
visual impairment of elevated Blood Alcohol Levels
.
Participants drove a golf cart through a course without the goggles,
then with the goggles. Participants also had to perform 3 simple motor
skills tests; heel-to-toe walk, dribble a basketball, and picking up
keys. Once the goggles were put on, an easy task was not so easy. Participants
would have trouble walking a straight line, when they did it with ease
without the goggles. They would run over several cones while driving
with the goggles and did not hit any without the goggles. Picking up
keys became comical as they would walk right over them or step on them.
The goggles greatly alter a person's depth perception and balance. With
the instantaneous effects that we feel with the goggles, it is not difficult
to perceive how dangerous it is to try to operate a vehicle after drinking
alcohol. We hope that the message of drinking and driving do not mix.

City DARE Program
The League
City DARE program received a donation of $1000.00 from the League City
Lions Club. The League City Police Department began the D.A.R.E. Program
in 1990, and over the past fourteen years, our D.A.R.E. officers have
been involved with and taught over 30,000 students in the Clear Creek
Independent School District. The D.A.R.E. Program has provided not only
educational needs for parents, children and schools in our community,
but has also served as a wonderful tool for other community-based resources. The
League City Lions Club sponsorship for the D.A.R.E. Program has been
