John
Griffith has been with the League City Police Department since
1992. He began as a dispatcher and was hired as a police officer
in 1993. While on patrol, he was trained in traffic accident
investigation and as a Crime Prevention Specialist. He also
chaperoned the League
City Intermediate School Choir to a choir contest at Walt Disney
Wolrd in Orlando, Florida. In 1996, he was transferred to the
Criminal Investigations
Division
and worked as an Investigator and Crime Prevention Officer.
In 1997, he became the first Community Outreach Officer, handling
all crime prevention and community service programs within
the
police department. During this time, he worked on many community
projects involving safety in the community. John worked with
Congressman Nick Lampson on child safety issues in Galveston
County. He was
a regular speaker for many groups in the area including the
Space Center Rotary, The Lions Club, AARP and the Chamber of
Commerce.
He was also a special guest instructor at Johnson Space Center
for "NASA Safety Day." John spearheaded many youth
oriented community programs such as "Kids n Cops" Summer
Softball, "Hoops
Over League City" Basketball Tournament, League City "National
Night Out" and the LCPD "Blue Santa Program".
He also started the "Kids n Cops" sporting event
program, where he and other police officers chaperoned kids
to local sporting
events such as Astros Baseball, Aeros Hockey, Oilers Football
and various college games. In 1999, he began to volunteer his
spring
break to chaperone the Washington DC trip for 5th graders
and has chaperoned more than 350 children to the nation's capitol.
In 2008, he will make his 10th trip with Bauerschlag Elementary.
In
2000, John was trained as a D.A.R.E. Officer and received
the award of "Top D.A.R.E. Officer" in his class.
He began teaching in League City and has taught at 8 elementary
schools in League City, and close to 10,000 children. In 2003,
he became the Training Coordinator for the League City Police
Department handling firearms and educational training within
the department while continuing to teach D.A.R.E. In 2005,
he
went back to teaching D.A.R.E. full time. He was also trained
in the D.A.R.E. Parent Program. John holds a Master Peace Officer Certification, the highest
certification that a police officer can receive. He is a Police
Instructor and has taught in the Police Academy at Alvin Community
College and College of the Mainland. He is also a Firearms Instructor,
responsible for training other police officers and maintaining
firearms qualifications. He is a Crime Prevention Specialist
licensed to perform home inspections for safety issues. He has
received the Life Saving Award and Employee of the Quarter Award
from the City of League City. John also received the Lifetime
Member Award from The National Parent Teacher Association for
his work as a D.A.R.E. officer. John
has worked hard in his career for what he believes is important.
He has done the same in personal life. He is married to his
wonderful wife Sherry, and has a beautiful daughter named
Peyton. He has
an Associates Degree in Education and is currently working
towards a Bachelors Degree in Education. |
