| Press Release * * * * During the Spring Break Holiday the League City Police Department will be enforcing Speed Laws and Seat Belt Laws in specially selected areas around the City in an effort to reduce crashes and injuries; and to encourage driver compliance with the laws. Because crashes involving excessive speed cause more injuries and deaths than any other moving violation, officers will be deployed in areas around League City where speeding violations most often occur. Officers will also be out enforcing seat belt laws. Officers will be highly visible observing traffic and stopping vehicles whose drivers and/or passengers are not complying with the State seat belt law. Drivers, front-seat passengers and children under 17 are required to be properly restrained or run the risk of a fine up to $200. Officers will also be watching for vehicles whose drivers have not properly secured a child in a child passenger safety seat. “We want to send a strong message to drivers about the importance of seat belt usage as a factor to save lives and reduce injuries”, said Captain Patrick Bittner. The law requires that: Research has shown that children do what their parents do: When a driver is buckled, children are buckled 87% of the time. However, when a driver isn’t wearing a safety belt, children are restrained only 24 % of the time. Captain Bittner says, “We ask for drivers to please be responsible. Buckle up and secure children and slow down.” .
