"Crime Into Art"

LEAGUE CITY — On Wednesday, August 23, 2006, at 11:00 a.m., the League City Police Department will be destroying confiscated guns, knives, rifles, and shotguns. This event will occur at the League City Police Department, 500 W. Walker, League City, Texas. What is unique about this is that, through the cooperation of the Butler Longhorn Museum, the destroyed weapons will be transformed into a life-size, creative art Texas Longhorn. The artist for this project is Terry Jones, an up and coming artist and metalworker from Jewett, Texas.

Terry Jones was born in Pasadena, Texas and graduated from South Houston High School. He learned to weld in a steel mill and started crafting life-size and whimsical sculptures made from anything metal. Terry has used seized firearms from local law enforcement agencies in the past and strives to turn what was once a negative into a positive. A picture of some of Terry’s art has been attached with this release.

The completed Longhorn will be displayed at the Butler Longhorn Museum for enjoyment by the community and area students. The Butler Longhorn Museum showcases Texas history and highlights the evolution of the Texas Longhorn. (click photo to enlarge)

The League City Police Department has over 100 weapons that will be destroyed during this event. The weapons range from guns recovered from traffic stops to weapons used in robberies. The transformation is part of a “turning weapons into art” television documentary by the Texas County Reporter and we are encouraging the local press to attend this event and promote this area of Texas history. Representatives from the Butler Longhorn Museum and the League City Police Department will be available for interviews.
