Retro Bill Safety Presentations

In March 2005, Officer Young and Officer Griffith of the League City Police Department D.A.R.E program hosted Retro Bill, the “Official D.A.R.E Safety Buddy” as a keynote speaker at all League City elementary and intermediate schools.

During the "live show" Retro Bill utilized a variety of colorful props to drive home his uplifting messages of safety, self-esteem and character counts topics! The 1950s-styled, pompadour-haired powerhouse Retro Bill also encouraged children to maintain a positive attitude. Retro Bill also encourages kids to do their homework and to participate in "positive alternatives" to bad things. Retro Bill's motto to children and parents is “What goes around comes around!”

Retro Bill is a "blast from the past" created and performed by Hollywood-based writer, director, producer and actor Bill Russ. Russ wrote, produced, directed and stars as his alter-ego Retro Bill in the Award-Winning “DARE Safety Tips Video starring Retro Bill.”. The video, which was produced by Bill Russ Productions, Inc. at a cost in excess of $250,000.00, was donated to the nation’s D.A.R.E. program in the fall of 2001. The video features 20 of the most essential safety tips for children and is currently being used by 40,000 D.A.R.E. Police Officers and School Resource Officers in more than 350,000 schools annually throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe and South America. You can view episodes from his safety video on Channel 16 on cable television.

Retro Bill visited students of League City elementary and intermediate schools during the week of March 28 to April 1. During his visit, he gave 21 presentations to over 7000 children and teachers. In addition to the school visitations, Retro Bill hosted a special D.A.R.E Family Night at the League City Civic Center on Wednesday, March 30 at 7:00pm. D.A.R.E Family Night was free and open to the citizens of League City. Approximately 200 people attended the presentation.

The presentations were a huge success and were covered by the media. FOX26 came to Goforth Elementary. NBC, Channel 2 News, came to Hall elementary. The Houston Chronicle visited Ferguson Elementary and Galveston Daily news covered the Creekside presentation.
